CENTRE FOR ECOLOGY & HYDROLOGY
Based at EDINBURGH
Environmental Physicist/Chemist (12-14 months maternity cover)
The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences. We have sites at Wallingford, Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster.
We have an opportunity for an Environmental Physicist/Chemist to join the Biogeochemistry Programme at CEH's Edinburgh site. The role involves being part of a team which coordinates the NitroEurope Integrated Project, manages UK monitoring networks for Defra and is involved in many NERC research projects to assess the controls and surface/atmosphere exchange of nitrogen compounds and greenhouse gases.
The role combines leadership, research and project management. In addition to report writing, operating instruments and conducting laboratory and field experiments you will liaise closely with customers and European partners. The field deployments will likely include both urban and rural settings in the UK within projects funded by NERC and Defra. Projects include the UK Eutrophying and Acidifying Atmospheric Pollutants monitoring network.
You will have a degree in a physical science and either a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience. Excellent numerical skills and an aptitude for organising field measurements are essential. You will have the ability to write and modify numerical models and be able to demonstrate experience with data acquisition software and research instrumentation. Experience of mass spectroscopy flux measurements and the development of atmospheric dispersion models would be clear advantages.
Full details can be found in the job description.
The salary for this post is £30,710 progressing to £37,120 per annum. In addition NERC offers a public sector pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday per annum.
