POSITION: Colorado State University is recruiting a Global Change Ecologist with empirical research expertise in Plant Community Ecology at the rank of Associate/Full Professor (with tenure). We seek a broadly trained individual with an established research program that integrates across levels of organization to provide a mechanistic understanding of community and ecosystem responses to global environmental change.
PhD: Changes in greenhouse gas emissions due to conversion of tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia to oil palm plantation
Submitted by agnieszka_eljasz on Mon, 23/08/2010 - 13:12.Natural peatlands are being converted to agriculture and forestry at an increasing rate, usually requiring drainage and burning. Because peatlands hold large amounts of carbon (C), these processes have high potential to emit greenhouse gases (GHGs). Carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from tropical peatlands are larger than from temperate or boreal peats (Jauhiainen et al 2005). Indonesia holds 22-26.5 Mha of peatland, 61% of which were covered by forest vegetation in 2000 (Joosten 2009). However, population growth has resulted in increased land use change, with oil palm and acacia being main drivers for conversion (Ravindranath et al 2009). This resulted in Indonesia being the largest emitter during 2008 of CO2 from drained peatlands (Joosten 2009).

Post-Doc position at JRC Ispra, Italy
Submitted by stefan_reis on Mon, 12/07/2010 - 10:10.JRC is looking for a post-doctoral researcher to work on the simulation of trace gas fluxes from terrestrial ecosystems in Europe. The tasks will include to contribute to the improvement of models that comprehensively assess the nitrogen and carbon cycles in forest and agricultural systems at the regional and global scale, and to contribute to the development of meta-models combining results of various models, field observations and remote sensing products into a consistent and integrated modeling framework.
